CHAPTER 9

Things I knew at this point. That was the title of the bullet point list I was creating in my head, what do I already know? What don't I know yet? How will I find out the answers to the things I don't know? When I put it like that, it almost seemed simple. Three parts of an investigation that I was responsible for wrapping up by myself with no police assistance, great.

The only thing I knew with any certainty now was that Nick Woods’ death had not been an accident. That implied that at least one other person currently at The Grove knew what happened to Nick and why he was now dead. The hand marks on his throat that Brielle had determined were from his strangulation compounded that theory.

His body had been warm when I went to room five, that suggested he hadn't been dead long. It could just be as simple as checking the cameras from the hallway in the hours leading up to the housekeeper entering and finding him. Anyone seen entering or leaving the room would then be questioned further and we could have this wrapped up before dinner. Like that ghost said, a girl can hope.

I was rolling solo now, standing at the reception desk pressing my finger against the bell to get the attention of the staff who were nowhere to be seen. I glanced towards the restaurant and saw William waiting on a table of guests, the booming sound from the event room behind me suggested that the writers’ conference was going ahead in Nicks absence, and I had to wonder if Phil had even considered cancelling it for a second.

“Sorry for the wait, I was just delivering room service,” Samantha replied breathlessly as she rushed behind the reception desk, smooth down her uniform, and then interlaced her fingers as she stared at me expectantly. “What can I help you with today Ms. Alden?”

“You have cameras in the hallways, is that right?” I asked.

“Yes, our security surveillance system covers the lobby, the drop off point is just outside the doors there,” she pointed through the glass entrance at the stretch of road where the taxis had dropped us off yesterday, “we have the indoor and outdoor dining area covered, the hallways and inside the elevator.”

“Could I see the footage for the hallway outside room five? I'm looking for activity one or two hours before housekeeping arrived,” I explained.

“Of course, Miss. Cross informed us to cooperate with your investigation in whatever way you need,” Samantha smiled. “I can show you to the security room, might have to move a few guards out of the way first. Since the hotel went into lockdown, they've been pretty intense, normally we only have one or two guards at a time, I think she's brought in all six of them today.”

She walked back around the desk and started across the lobby floor before abruptly stopping and turning back to face me, narrowly avoiding a collision.
